“Granda Jack!” screamed Sophie.

“Don't be afraid,” whispered her grandfather, his eyes fixed on the dragon. “Easter won't harm you. He has given his word.”

Hearing this, Easter stopped. “Yes,” it growled, as smoke billowed in circles from its mouth. “I have given my word. We dragons are known for keeping our word.” It glared at Armandonio. “Not like some leprechauns I know. Now, Magician, where do you want me to fly you?”

“Above the trees,” said Jack. “And across the Wondrous Place.”

“Then climb on my back,” said Easter, turning its head and suddenly blasting a barrage of cinders and flames at another tree. “My fire breathing is better than it ever was,” it added, rolling over onto its side and spreading out one wing.

“Come on,” said Jack. Leading the way he stepped onto the dragon's webbed wing and walked right to the center of its broad back between where its powerful wings were joined to its body. Seconds later, everyone was seated beside him.

“We're ready when you are, Easter!” shouted Jack.

Almost immediately the small company were being bounced up and down, as Easter raced along the ground on its two huge flat feet. Seconds later they were rising into the air. Easter flew in a circle several times to build up speed then suddenly it shot up through the branches. Three seconds later, they were flying above the trees.

Jack looked around as they rose higher. To his left he could see two tall mountains. “Easter!” he shouted, as he pointed towards them. “Fly us to yonder mountains!”

Easter turned to see which direction Jack was pointing, then it flew higher.

After they had been flying for about five minutes Sophie shouted, “Granda Jack! Why are we flying to the mountains?”

“There is a place I know beyond them, were we might get help to find the magic!” answered Granda Jack.

His grandfather smiled his mysterious knowing smile and said, “I know.” Then he turned to look towards the mountains.

They flew for another half hour until they were approaching the mountains.

“Could you land us in that valley?” shouted Jack pointing.

“I can land you right on top of the mountains if you like!” shouted Easter and began to drop towards the wide low valley Jack had indicated.

A clear river ran through the valley and already they were close enough to see strange fish leaping from it and dropping back again. On both sides of the river grew tall grass.

Seconds later, Easter was skidding to a halt on the grass, landing about ten meters from the edge of the river.

A minute later, everyone was standing watching the dragon fly away. As it did Easter shouted, “I have honored my word! Remember, if I see you again I have my fire. I might have to fry you to a frazzle.” Suddenly it rose higher and soon was out of sight.

“His fire won't last long without the magic,” said Jack quietly. “Come on.”

Now, Jake, Sophie and Armandonio followed Jack along the river. As they hurried after him, Sophie was thinking about the blue trunk they had opened.
